Adapting to the times

An anonymous person once said, “When something goes wrong in your life, just yell ‘plot twist’ and move on.”

Here at Airdrie Public Library (APL), we have been yelling “plot twist” since the COVID-19 pandemic altered how we offer the services and programs Airdronians have come to expect.

When the library facility shut down, we expanded our online presence and began offering greater access to a growing list of e-resources while also providing virtual programming for all ages that became very popular.

Now that the facility is open – with restrictions that limit the number of people allowed in the building – we are adapting once again.

Sept. 8 will see the start of a robust fall programming schedule, and much of it will be offered live through Zoom and as recorded events for later viewing on www.airdriepubliclibrary.ca in case you can’t make a live event.

Some highlights include preschool literacy programs supported by Vitreous Glass Inc., which will return as Zoom events. Among these are Sing, Read, Rhyme; ToddlerTime' Babytime; and Family Storytime. These programs, along with Bedtime Storytime, will be available on our website for later viewing.

Wiggle Wednesday resumes Sept. 9 and Virtual Travelling and Tunes starts Sept. 22, both through Zoom.

Children ages six to 13 have a variety of Zoom programming covering crafts, STEAM, Tween Zone and Virtual Homeschooling.

Listening Tails returns as our only in-library program, in partnership with the Community Therapy Dog Society.

Teens have four great Zoom programs they can take part in – Podcast Club, virtual board games, Virtual Adulting 101 and the Teen Advisory Council.

For the adults, we have the Poetry in Motion Open Mic event Sept. 19. At the event, the winners and runners-up of the poetry contest will read their entries. Then, on Sept. 26, the Voice and Vision Gala will take place. Meanwhile, Tales for the Tall resumes as Zoom Crew.

In October, look for a virtual Pumpkin Palooza and Star Wars Reads Day, supported by Chinook Gate.

Also watch for the Book Club, Genealogy Club and Adult Writers Club, all available through Zoom.
