Libraries in Alberta are governed under the Alberta Libraries Act and Regulations, which form the legal basis for the existence of public libraries in a community. While libraries across North America have a history of social and political activism – take Freedom to Read Week in support of intellectual freedom for instance – it’s not often a library will throw open its doors and welcome the flurry of activity surrounding an election, especially in this era of hyper-partisan politics. However, part of Airdrie Public Library’s (APL) service plan is to provide space for all the many cultural facets of the community – art, music, literature, technology, along with children, youth and adult programs. And even provincial politics. It’s what the cultural hub of a community does. Please join us on April 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. as we host a Coffee with the Candidates event. Meet and mingle over coffee with candidates running for MLA in Airdrie-East and Airdrie-Cochrane. Candidates will be given time to give a short presentation starting at 6:30 p.m., so you’ll have the opportunity to hear their platforms, but also to chat one-on-one about the important issues we face as a province. Also coming up at APL, join us in the late morning hours of April 13, for an author reading and intimate discussion with Calgary author Dwayne Clayden. Clayden is an instructor, speaker and writer, who uses his experience as a police office and paramedic to write crime thrillers. APL is fortunate to have this popular speaker. Clayden’s first novel, Crisis Point, was a finalist for the 2015 Crime Writers of Canada awards, and his expertise in writing or portraying realistic scenes involving police and emergency services is in high demand. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will include refreshments, a book signing and a prize draw. For more information on programs and resources, visit airdriepubliclibrary.ca, call 403-948-0600 or drop by the library and get your free library card.
