It's 2020 and people are struggling with COVID-19, the economy and more. It's not a surprise then, that charitable giving is down heading into the holidays, even as the need for support is greater than ever—especially at Alberta food banks.

The good news is that the solution may be sitting in people’s pantries.

Since March, Albertans have been collecting non-perishables to prepare for a possible quarantine. But for the nearly 90,000 Albertans who rely on the food bank each month, the emergency is now.

"The unpredictability and uncertainty of employment and other factors remain major concerns as we head into the winter months,” said Marjorie Bencz, Executive Director of the Edmonton Food Bank. “The people we help may surprise you: they are our neighbours, coworkers, families, and friends needing a little extra help. Gifts of food and funds have a direct and positive impact."

The Alberta Motor Association (AMA) is issuing an urgent appeal for people to share what they’ve stocked, if they’re able to do so.

“Albertans should never have to choose between feeding their families and keeping a roof over their heads,” said Jane Flower, Vice-President of AMA Brand and Member Experience. “While these are challenging times for everyone, many of us have non-perishables in our pantries that could give a boost to those who need it most.”

From now until Dec. 16, AMA is inviting people to #StackToSackHunger in support of Fill Our Fleet, the annual campaign for food banks across the province. People can help in a variety of ways, including a social media challenge. Dig into your pantries and stack what you stocked. Share a picture or video of your creative food tower, tag it #StackToSackHunger, then challenge three friends to do the same. People can drop off stacks at their nearest AMA centre.

Donate online: Give directly to your local food bank by donating online at FillOurFleet.ca. Every dollar buys three meals for a neighbour in need.

Donate in-person: Non-perishable and monetary donations will be accepted at AMA centres across the province.Drive-Thru Drop-Off Events
