Body found in Smoky Lake identified as missing Edmonton man

Police have positively identified a body discovered at the Smoky Lake gravel pits in June as 56-year-old Meharena Ghebreyesus.

SMOKY LAKE, Alta. – The remains of a man found deceased in Smoky Lake in June, have been positively identified as missing 56-year-old Meharena Ghebreyesus of Edmonton.  

RCMP confirmed the identity of the deceased man on Aug. 4, following an autopsy conducted on July 5.

After the initial press release confirming Ghebreyesus had been located deceased, Smoky Lake RCMP clarified in a statement that "the circumstances surrounding the death are believed to be non-criminal."

Final autopsy results are still pending.

Ghebreyesus was reported missing to the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) on Oct. 29, 2021, by a family member who told police they last saw the 56-year-old on Oct. 3, 2021. 

About eight months later, the Smoky Lake RCMP were dispatched to a complaint of possible human remains found at the Smoky Lake gravel pits at 9:40 a.m. on June 29. 

The gravel pit where the body was located is off Township Road 610 and Range Road 181 within Smoky Lake County.  

No further updates are anticipated to be released in relation to this matter, according to a Smoky Lake RCMP press release. 

Smoky Lake RCMP extend their condolences to all affected by this tragedy.
