Eric Jens Newman
July 17, 1928 – June 28, 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa Eric Jens Newman at the age of 94.
Eric was raised on a farm west of Airdrie where his parents, Harold & Agnes Newman, settled after immigrating from Denmark in 1923. After Eric married Ruby in 1948 they purchased farmland and settled in the Conrich area where they assisted with the operation of her family’s mixed farm that had been established by Ruby’s grandfather in 1905. Although Eric enjoyed all aspects of life on a farm, working long hours in the fields and keeping equipment running, his particular love was for the farm animals, especially the cattle.
After taking over the family farm from Ruby’s father Ruben Wikner, the farm demanded many hours but Eric still had time for family and friends, for trips to far flung places, for a round or two of golf, and, in his later years, for winters in Yuma. When Ken took over the family farm it allowed Eric to spend more time on travel, visiting and gardening. Ruby passed away in 2000. Eric married Ruth Johnson and moved to her place to help her keep one of the tidiest yards you’ll ever see.
He was predeceased by his wife Ruby, his granddaughter Sandra, his second wife Ruth, and his sister Jean (Mooney). He is survived by his three children, Karen, Diane (Bear) and Ken (Gillian) along with 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; and Ruth’s four children Keith (Louise), Neil, Bruce (Rosalund), Karl (Liubov).
Eric is remembered by his family as a loving, quiet, very hardworking, and smart man. He is remembered by all as kind, respectful, a good golfer, and a fun card and marbles player. He is missed by many.
Friends and family are invited to his Celebration of Life on July 15, 2:00 pm, at Delacour Community Hall, 275194 Township Road 254, Rocky View County, AB T1Z 0E6
