Lightning U16 Tier 1 boys fall to Oilers in elimination game

The Airdrie U16 Lightning were eliminated from the playoffs by the Okotoks Oilers with a final score of 4-2.

The Airdrie U16 Tier 1 Lightning were eliminated from the playoffs by the Okotoks Oilers with a final score of 4-2.

The teams were evenly matched coming into Saturday night's crucial game 5 at Genesis Place in Airdrie after splitting their first four games two a piece.

Both teams had plenty of support in the crowd during the nail-biter of a game where the teams exchanged goals nearly back to back in both the first and second periods, setting up a dramatic third period showdown with the score tied 2-2.

Okotoks took the lead at about the mid-point of the hard-hitting third period and from there never relinquished its lead.

Airdrie had a great chance to tie the game when Okotoks received a major four minute penalty with just over five minutes left to go on the clock. However, a determined stand by the Oilers' penalty kill withstood the Lightning onslaught and managed to run down the clock on the penalty.

The Oilers added an empty netter as the period came to a close, before celebrating their win as the final buzzer sounded.
